If you have a newborn and a tin of formula in the kitchen, the question arrives fast: is the water from my Dubai tap safe to mix it with? The short, honest answer is reassuring — DEWA’s water leaves the plant as some of the cleanest in the world, and for a healthy baby in a well-run building, tap water prepared correctly is fine for formula. But “safe for adults” and “safe for a two-week-old’s bottle” are not quite the same sentence, and the difference is worth ten minutes. This guide covers what actually matters: the storage tank on your roof, the WHO’s 70°C rule that most parents get wrong, why “zero-TDS” RO water isn’t the upgrade it sounds like, and how to be certain rather than hopeful. None of this is about frightening you off Dubai’s water — it’s about preparing a bottle with confidence.

Is Dubai tap water safe for babies? The honest answer.

Yes — at the source, and with the right preparation. DEWA treats its water to World Health Organization and GSO 149 standards, testing against more than 100 parameters, and around 99% of it comes from desalination. On the day it leaves the plant, it is genuinely excellent water. For formula feeding, only two things really matter: the quality of the water when it reaches your tap, and how you prepare the bottle.

The reason babies get their own guide is simple biology. An infant drinks far more water per kilo of body weight than an adult, their kidneys are still maturing, and their bodies are less able to buffer certain contaminants. A trace of something that is irrelevant for a grown adult can matter for a 4 kg newborn. So “safe for adults” is the right starting point, not the finish line. The hidden risks on the ‘last meter’

DEWA’s responsibility ends at the mains. From there, your water passes through your building’s storage tank and internal pipes before it reaches your kitchen — the stretch we call the “last meter,” and the place where quality can actually change. In summer especially, a rooftop tank in direct sun heats up, chlorine protection fades, and bacteria can grow. Dubai Municipality requires these tanks to be cleaned by licensed companies at least every six months, but the tank is controlled by your building, not by you. Two things concern parents specifically. Older buildings can still leach lead or copper from aging solder joints and fittings — metals that matter far more for an infant than an adult. And nitrate is the one contaminant with a genuinely infant-specific risk: in babies under six months, high nitrate can interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, a rare condition known as methaemoglobinaemia, or “blue baby syndrome.” The WHO limit for nitrate in drinking water is 50 mg/L, and DEWA water sits well within it — but an old building, an unusual supply, or a private source is exactly the kind of unknown a lab test resolves.

None of this is common in a modern, well-run Dubai building. The point is not to worry — it is that the last meter is invisible, and the only way to replace guessing with knowing is to measure.

The 70°C rule: what WHO and NHS actually say about formula prep

Here is the single most important thing in this article, and it surprises most parents: the main safety risk in formula feeding is not the water — it is the powder. Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product. It can occasionally contain bacteria such as Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella, which are rare but can be serious for a newborn. The WHO’s answer is simple and well-evidenced: mix the powder with water that is at least 70°C, because water at that temperature inactivates those bacteria on contact. This applies even to filtered water.

  1. Boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than about 30 minutes, so it stays at 70°C or above.
  2. Pour the measured hot water into a sterilised bottle first.
  3. Add the exact amount of powder stated on the tin.
  4. Seal and shake, then cool quickly under a running cold tap or in a bowl of cold water until it reaches body temperature (~37°C).
  5. Test a drop on your wrist before feeding, and discard anything left after two hours.

The common mistakes are mixing with lukewarm water “so it’s ready faster,” or making bottles in advance and leaving them out. Both defeat the purpose of the 70°C rule. And note: this rule is about the powder, not the water — filtering your water does not remove the need to prepare with hot water for a young infant. The RO trap: why ‘zero-TDS’ water isn’t ideal for babies

Many Dubai homes solve the water question with a reverse-osmosis (RO) system, on the logic that removing everything must be safest. For a baby, that logic has a flaw. RO strips out 90–99% of everything dissolved in the water — including the natural minerals. Formula powder is already carefully balanced with the minerals an infant needs; the WHO has repeatedly flagged concerns about the long-term use of demineralised water, and very “empty” water can also affect taste and acceptance.

The opposite mistake matters too. Some highly mineralised bottled waters carry a lot of sodium, which infant kidneys handle poorly — so “natural mineral water” is not automatically the right pick either. For formula, you want water that is low in sodium and moderate — not zero — in minerals. The table below shows the trade-off.

Does boiling tap water make it safe for formula?

Partly — and this is where a lot of parents get caught out. Boiling kills bacteria, which is useful. But boiling removes nothing chemical: not chlorine, not lead, not nitrate. Worse, as the water evaporates it concentrates the dissolved solids left behind, so a nitrate or mineral level can actually rise slightly. Boiling is a disinfection step, not a purification step. What paediatric guidance actually says — and the bottled-water cost trap

Pulled together, the mainstream guidance (WHO, NHS, CDC) is consistent: use clean, low-contaminant water; sterilise bottles and equipment for young infants; and prepare each feed with water of at least 70°C, cooled before feeding. This is general information, not medical advice — for anything specific to your baby, your paediatrician is the right call, especially for premature or immunocompromised infants.

Many parents default to bottled water to sidestep the whole question. It is an understandable instinct, but it has two hidden costs.
